Objects of luxury have existed historically for a long time; however, the conscious marketing of luxury products to an affluent and aspirational clientele developed in the late 17th century in France.  The range of products and the techniques used to develop and market them were conceived by Louis XIV and his chief ministers both to enrich and to glorify France.  This slide lecture by Jim Caughman of Baker and Kohler will investigate this history and trace the influence of these early efforts to many of today's venerable luxury brands.
